From "worthless" to a life filled with joy
Encounter October 2019

I used to work a lot—like 80 hours a week to a place where I was pretty much killing myself. I didn’t realize it then, but I was seeking fulfillment and purpose in the wrong place. I wasn’t happy at all.

I tore my Achilles tendon and had to have surgery and wasn’t able to work. I felt worthless.

During this time St. Dominic had a retreat, and I didn’t have anything else to do, so I just went. Here I felt God asking me to let Him lead me, which would mean I wouldn’t be able to work as much.

A short while later I was invited on a mission trip to Haiti and I went. After I returned, I quite my job and was blessed with one at Catholic Charities.

My life now is filled with so much joy. I’m striving to serve God through my work and serving the people in my community had brought great meaning and purpose to my life.

Your story matters

The story of our relationship with Jesus Christ is the best tool we have to spread the Good News. It is personal, it is real, and it is the thing we know the most about our own experience with God.

Share Your Story

Use these prompts to help craft your story. 1. Reflect on the Discipleship Pathway Your story might encompass elements from your encounter with Jesus, being formed as his disciple, or evangelizing others. Aim to focus your story on one aspect of the Discipleship Pathway (e.g. Encounter, Form, Evangelize). 2. Write your story down. Sit down, pray, and write out your personal story asking the Holy Spirit for help. Writing it down will help organize your thoughts. 3. Keep it brief. Your story should be able to be told in 3 minutes or less. This may seem challenging, but a good story should be engaging and concise. All of Jesus's parables were this way, and we would love to tell stories like Jesus.
